the artist
Connie Steers is a painter, planner and place expert living in Geeveston.
She's often found at Harvest & Light, pinot in hand, dachshund in tow. She writes Place Notes, a Substack on Australian places, and spends her working life asking what makes one town different from the next.
Her collection of field notes asks the same question, and answers it in colour.
the concept
The Huon Valley can be simply viewed with a green colour palette.
It presents in the hills, the reflections of the river and the orchard leaves. This concept works until you drive the dirt roads, walk the trails and start to see that each town has its own unique palette.
Dover is blue at the waterline. Glaziers Bay is pinot red through the vine rows. Ranelagh in autumn is poplar gold.
The method borrows from synaesthesia. Each location is read through the palette offered by the landscape, the seasons and the fabric of the town.
